The Lowdown on Male Skin Treatments

Male treatments

When looking at skin treatments, it's tempting to go for the newest ones out there. But, it's key to keep in mind that everyone's skin is different and a holistic approach to treatment can often yield the best results. That's where facial assessment comes in.

Why men may want to have skin treatments

Let’s face it, New Zealand’s sun can be harsh and it’s common for New Zealand men to spend time outdoors. This can take a toll on your skin, whether that be a direct result of sun damage or lines and wrinkles that occur from squinting.1

Like women, some men may want to keep their skin healthy, youthful and rejuvenated. Just like maintaining a healthy diet and exercise routine, taking care of your skin can improve your confidence and sense of self. However, a man’s skin can differ from a woman's, so it’s important to be aware of your skin type and what treatments will suit it best.

What are some of the skin treatments available for men?

Anti-wrinkle treatments

As sun exposure accelerates water loss and ageing of skin, sun protection in the form of a broad-spectrum sunscreen (with SPF 50+), hats and clothing are key. Dehydrated skin and fine lines may be improved with topical and injectable products that attract and retain water, plumping the skin. In addition, there are also aesthetic treatments that can help reduce the appearance of set-in lines and wrinkles, such as DYSPORT®. DYSPORT® is a form of anti-wrinkle treatment that temporarily reduces muscle contraction and hence the depth of expression lines.

These products contain a neurotoxin that temporarily reduces muscle movement, so that expression lines do not appear as deep when frowning or smiling.

Chemical peels

For those men who aren’t ready to commit to a multi-step skincare routine, and therefore don’t regularly exfoliate, a chemical peel can be a great way to remove layers of damaged skin and surface lines. Often referred to as the ‘lunchtime peel,’ due to its easy-to-manage aftercare and short treatment time, a mild chemical peel is a quick way to refresh your face. Stronger peels can penetrate deep into the layers of the skin to help stimulate collagen production.¹

With many variations on offer, we recommend that you consult a qualified healthcare practitioner to understand what chemical peel is best for your skin type.

Hyperpigmentation treatments

Mild hyperpigmentation is a skin concern that can be difficult to manage but there are some treatment options for men looking to tackle those peskier spots, such as dermabrasion and microdermabrasion.

These types of treatments use a tool that sweeps the skin with an abrasive attachment, removing portions of the outermost skin layers. This can help to remove hyperpigmentation,  acne scarring, age spots and scarring. It can take a few weeks to see visible results so, patience is key.²

Laser hair removal

Some men may love facial and body hair - but it’s not for everyone. Either way, everyday general hair removal through shaving and plucking can be time consuming. For those looking to cut down their daily grooming time and permanently remove their hair, laser hair removal can help. The treatment involves a machine that produces energy to penetrate through the skin and reach your hair follicles.¹

The melanin pigment in your hair absorbs the energy, which injures the hair follicle. This causes the hair to fall out and makes it more difficult to grow back. Treatment times vary from 10 minutes to several hours, depending on what hair needs treatment. As hair grows in cycles, it recommended to follow up with multiple sessions - the number of sessions required varies from person to person. Those who have short, thick and dark hair are the best candidates for this treatment.¹
