What causes dark circles
under the eyes?

The area under our eyes, known as the periorbital region, is the first facial area to show signs of aging.⁶ Volume loss causes hollowing of the area, leading to what’s known as tear trough deformity (TTD).⁷ This loss of volume can create shadows^*, and emphasize dark circles* in the under-eye region.⁷ The underlying cause of TTD is multifactorial.^7-8

Three key aspects are:

Genetics: differences in our skin that we inherit and show up at a young age
Aging: loss of facial volume in this area over time
A combination of genetics, aging, and lifestyle factors, leading to a tired and “grumpy” appearance
