Crow’s feet

Crow’s feet are fine lines that show up on the outer corners of our eyes. They resemble the feet of a crow–hence the name. And though perhaps unwanted, they’re perfectly normal to experience as we age.

What are crow's feet?

There are many types of fine lines and wrinkles and a name for almost every type we may experience on our face. An all too familiar–but not untreatable–type is, of course, crow’s feet.1

Where do crow’s feet come from?

Over time, our skin loses elasticity, and its structure begins to change.1 These changes, along with a life filled with smiling, laughing and expressing our emotions, make us prone to fine lines and wrinkles.

Unfortunately, these lines can make us look old, sad, tired or angry, regardless of how we feel. What’s more, such a disconnect between how we look and how we feel can have an impact on our self-confidence and overall quality of life.1,2

Crow’s feet treatments

The good news is that treatments are available to reduce the appearance of crow’s feet and make you feel like yourself again. By temporarily relaxing the facial muscles, these treatments help restore a youthful bounce without making you look frozen.2

Frequently asked questions

Expression lines appear as we express our emotions, for example when we smile, laugh or frown. When we are young, these expression lines disappear when our faces are relaxed. With aging, due to changes in the underlying structure of our skin, dynamic wrinkles become static and do not go away when our face is at rest.1

Many worry that aesthetic treatments will lead to a “frozen look.” You might have seen people who you thought had stiff facial features, and the truth is that this is usually the result of overtreatment.2 It is actually quite easy to avoid overtreatment by speaking directly with a healthcare practitioner about your desired outcome.

A clinical study evaluating the effectiveness of a treatment for frown lines showed significant changes in the patient’s psychological well-being after the treatment.3 The study showed that aesthetic treatments for expression lines can indeed have a much more profound effect on us than just changing our physical appearance. Aesthetic treatments can, in fact, make us feel happier. When expression lines are reduced, we become more confident and have higher self-esteem.1
